"According to Montaigne our minds
do nothing but “ferret and quest”
sniff out
dig up
seek, as Odysseus
on the run from tragedy
to romance, evading
temptation and brutality,
succumbing too—
what would ferreting and questing be
without giving in
without overpowering
but finally, after all that,
sweaty and famished,
falling into open arms."
